Not much is known about Bussa. He was a free man born in the 18th Century, in the homeland of many slaves, Africa. He was later captured and brought to a place called 'Barbados', and became a slave. His name is only documented on historical records, and there are no details about his life, or when he was captured.
On April 14th, 1816, he led a group of slaves involving over 400 of them, to an revolt against the British sugar cane planters. This rebellion was planned very carefully, after the rejection of the Imperial Registry Bill in 1815. The rebellion led by Bussa was the first in 124 years in Barbados. Bussa was killed during the revolt, and the slaves were outmatched to the newest weapons the british army had. |
